School On Wheels Raises Over $27,000
On Saturday, April 27th, more than 540 runners and walkers opened their wallets and left their footprints on the trails of Borderland to support School on Wheels of Massachusetts (SOWMA) at the Outrunning Homelessness Race and Fun Walk. The fundraiser, sponsored by Crescent Credit Union, raised over $27,000 to help SOWMA to continue serving students who have no place to call home.
While the financial goals for SOWMA’s Outrunning Homelessness Race and Fun Walk may change from year-to-year, the purpose remains constant-to bring the community together to support SOWMA’s mission of providing academic support and one-on-one tutoring/mentoring to children experiencing homelessness.
“I can’t begin to express my gratitude for everyone that came out to support School on Wheels,” said race director and co-founder Dennis Harkins. “It’s hard to believe that in just 3 years we’ve grown from 175 to 540 participants and raised over $55,000 for SOWMA through this event.”
The musical entertainment, provided by Nelson Cruz Entertainment, added a festive air to the event, while volunteers ran activity stations for kids. A large number of volunteers helped ensure a successful event.
With an estimated 50,000 homeless children enrolled in Massachusetts public schools and an estimated dropout rate of more than 75% among homeless teens, SOWMA has seen dramatic growth in the need for its life-changing services.
